How Often to Replace a Car Battery

Auto Mechanic Replacing Car Battery

Knowing how often to replace a car battery can save you quite a bit of time and trouble, and most Fountain Hills-area drivers change their car batteries every four to five years. Although we’re happy to inspect your battery when you bring your vehicle in for standard maintenance, we can also teach you how to test a car battery at home!

How to Know If Your Car Battery Needs to Be Replaced

Replacing your battery every four to five years can prevent most electrical issues from occurring, but it’s still a good idea to get familiar with the warning signs of a dying battery. Here’s how to know if your car battery needs to be replaced:

  • Your vehicle has dim or dying headlights
  • You’ve had to perform several jump starts in recent memory
  • You’ve been experiencing unusual or unpredictable power fluctuations
  • The “Service Vehicle” light appears on your dashboard display

All batteries deteriorate with time, but excessive heat, extreme cold, and constant vibration can also take a toll on a battery’s additional components. Depending on the age of your battery, it may be a good idea to have it checked out before the heights of summer return to Scottsdale and Mesa.

How to Test a Car Battery

The easiest way to check a car battery involves a simple, three-step process. You won’t even need any special tools:

  1. Turn on your vehicle, keep the car in park, and make sure that your headlights are turned on.
  2. Rev the engine, paying close attention to the intensity of your headlights. The lack of a change indicates a healthy battery.
  3. If your headlights get brighter, you’re in trouble. This reaction means that your battery does not have a lot of power, and it’s relying on the alternator to pick up the slack.

At this point, you have two options. The safest and easiest of these is to bring your vehicle directly to our service center and have us take a closer look. It’s easy to schedule battery replacement online.

However, some Phoenix drivers may prefer to perform a deeper inspection at home. You’ll need to pick up a digital multimeter from our parts department, and you should always exercise caution when you’re working with a vehicle’s battery, but the process itself is very simple:

  1. Set the voltmeter to 20 DC volts.
  2. Open your hood, and touch the negative terminal with the negative (black) meter probe.
  3. Now, touch the positive terminal with the positive (red) meter probe.
  4. Have a friend turn on the headlights.
  5. Check the voltmeter reading and get your result.

If your readout is 12.5 volts or higher, your battery is probably just fine. If it’s fallen to 11.8 volts, you have less than 25% of a full charge remaining and you should have your battery replaced as soon as possible.

How Much is a Replacement Car Battery?

Replacement batteries for non-hybrid vehicles tend to cost somewhere between $75 and $200, but high-quality batteries can be more expensive in some cases. A hybrid car battery can cost anywhere between $1000 and $6000, but these expensive components are almost always protected by long-lasting warranty coverage. The same is true for electric vehicles.
